why not do the Amercian thing of "shopping your closet" - to translate, rethink and possibly rework garments and accesssories you already own, so with that initial inspiration you're imagination will hopefully run wild!

update your grandmother's tweed jacket by adding a trimming of lace, update an old beret with feathers and crystals.

add some little bows to a plain bra, pompoms to a basket.

take out shoulder-pads, add shoulder-pads.

or if you want to start from scratch ...
vintage patterns - why not add your very own personal twist to them? Shorten the length, use different materials to those suggested, change the sleeves, use different fastenings.
